Celebrating the Holidays with a Loved One Who Has Dementia

Holidays bring joy and nostalgia, but they can also be overwhelming and confusing for someone with memory loss. With small adjustments, you can make them more enjoyable for everyone.

Plan with Purpose

  • Involve your loved one in preparations, like decorating or reminiscing.
  • Set limits for gatherings and be clear with others about what’s best.
  • Avoid noisy or unfamiliar places that may trigger confusion.

Create a Calm Environment

  • Stick to familiar routines and avoid bright or dim lighting.
  • Keep visits short and in comfortable settings, like their home.
  • Limit the number of guests at one time.

Help Guests Prepare

  • Let them know what to expect: wandering, unusual behavior, speech issues, etc.
  • Share photos of guests in advance and remind your loved one who they are.

Take Care of Yourself Too

  • Make time for a personal holiday activity.
  • Ask someone to stay with your loved one while you rest or step out.
  • Get enough sleep and pace the season’s demands.

Top Tip: The holidays are a time for you to enjoy yourself, too. We’re sure you have come across all the cliches about caregivers pouring from an empty cup, etc., but the holidays truly are a time to find joy and space for yourself. If you can, plan for extra help to be around at this time, so you are not overburdened, or reach out to your local community to see if there are shared events you and your loved one can attend.
