Making Outings Easier and More Enjoyable

Outings can be uplifting for someone in the early stages of dementia. With a few adjustments, you can keep trips enjoyable and low-stress.

Plan Ahead

  • Schedule outings during times when your loved one feels most alert and calm.
  • Keep trips short to prevent fatigue.
  • Use a card to discreetly explain your loved one’s condition and behavior, if needed.

Dining Out Tips

  • Choose a quiet place or go at off-peak times.
  • Limit menu choices and read them aloud.
  • Order appetizers if wait times are long.
  • Ask to sit in a quiet area, with your loved one facing away from distractions.
  • Tell servers about special needs, like extra napkins or utensils.
  • Ask for drinks to be served in smaller portions or bring your own pitcher.

Be Prepared

  • Bring utensils that are easier to hold.
  • Pack bathroom supplies, towels, or wipes.
  • Always check if it’s a good day to go — be flexible.

Top Tip: Recreating your regular routines in a dining-out setting can be helpful. So, whatever you can do to make the experience feel familiar, whether it’s eating their favorite food or using the same utensils, is likely to help make the experience less overwhelming.
