Advice by Alicia: The Benefits of Early Detection and Planning

Q: We are suspicious my loved one might have dementia. They are showing signs of memory loss. Do you have any advice on what we should do now?

A: Seeking a dementia diagnosis is an emotional decision that may come with fear of judgment, worries about the future, or concerns about how loved ones will react. Perhaps you’ve been witnessing some early warning signs and are ready to get more information, even though it’s overwhelming. While these emotions are valid, knowing there are also benefits to receiving a diagnosis is important. After all, we can’t seek help without knowing what we are facing.

Although there is currently no cure or way to reverse the progression of dementia, confirmation is critical because it allows the individual and their family to prepare for the future effectively. Outlined below are the primary benefits of early detection:

Medical Benefits

Memory loss can be caused by other health problems, such as urinary tract infections, vitamin deficiencies, or medication side effects. Early diagnosis can rule out these conditions and enable families to research potential treatments and clinical trials, which are most effective in the early stages. It also allows time for lifestyle changes to help preserve cognitive function and slow disease progression. It also allows for an opportunity to put together a care team to help best as the dementia progresses.

Emotional Benefits

Receiving a diagnosis can reduce anxiety by providing an understanding of the changes and symptoms a person may be experiencing. It gives time to seek education, mental health resources, and support from others. Families may be more intentional about recording meaningful memories with their loved ones through writing, photos, or videos.

Social Benefits

With an early diagnosis, individuals can explain their situation to family and friends in their way when they are most comfortable. They can also take time to focus on relationships or pursue lifelong dreams.

Future Planning Benefits

A huge benefit of early detection is time. You’ll have the time to think through important decisions. Individuals have the opportunity to be involved in legal, financial, future care, and end-of-life decisions following an early diagnosis. These plans can reduce the weight on families and prevent future conflicts. You can also check out my blog about dementia caregiving to learn more about this part of your journey.

The Importance of a Screening

Memory loss does not automatically indicate Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Getting screened allows you to determine if your memory challenges are related to dementia and then effectively plan for future care, such as at a memory care community like Bridges® by EPOCH.
