Understanding the signs and stages of Alzheimer’s

An important part of recognizing and managing Alzheimer’s disease is understanding the signs and stages.

In the earliest stages, many people struggle to distinguish between memory impairment and the memory changes that can come with aging. They may feel like they’re simply experiencing memory lapses, as symptoms are difficult to detect.

Someone experiencing age-related memory changes may occasionally forget things but will often remember them later on. Conversely, someone with Alzheimer’s will experience forgetfulness regularly and continue to experience new challenges performing daily tasks.

The Alzheimer’s Organization outlines common signs of Alzheimer’s to help you distinguish between early onset Alzheimer’s and normal aging. Common signs include:

  • Memory loss that disrupts normal life
  • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
  • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
  • Changes in mood and personality

As Alzheimer’s progresses, individuals will experience memory lapses more frequently. They may struggle to remember names of new people they meet, and experience greater difficulty performing tasks in social or work settings.

Someone in the moderate-stages of Alzheimer’s is more likely to forget recent events as well as facts about their personal history. They may become increasingly moody or withdrawn, especially when confronted with a socially or mentally challenging situation.

As they progress to the more severe stages, they may lose all awareness of recent experiences and their surroundings. They’ll have trouble remembering the names of people close to them, and may need help dressing properly. They also may experience major changes in their sleep patterns.
