5 foods that combat Alzheimer’s

We’ve discussed before that mental and physical exercise can help delay the onset or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia. In addition, a healthy diet can also help delay symptoms and promote brain health. According to Natural News, certain foods help battle the impairments caused by dementia and might even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. With that in mind, we should all incorporate these foods into our daily diets: 

1. Green, leafy vegetables

Mustard leaves, spinach, kale and collard. Why do they help? They contain a high folic acid content, which helps decrease depression and improve cognitive functioning.

2. The cabbage family

Cauliflower, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and bok choy. Like the leafy greens, these vegetables contain folic acid. They also have carotene, which helps decrease the levels of amino acids associated with memory impairment.

3. Legumes and beans

The magnesium, iron, folic acid and potassium found in legumes and beans help boost brain cells, in addition to promoting the healthy functioning of both the brain and body’s various systems.

These can be found in supplements, fish, olive oil and flaxseed. Daily consumption of omega-3 can reduce the risk of developing disease-causing lesions in the brain. They also help maintain and even enhance brain functioning.

5. Spices!

  • Sage, cinnamon, turmeric and cumin. These spices help break down plaque buildup in the brain. Additionally:
  • Sage has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (antioxidants can help fight damage to the brain)
  • Cinnamon helps enhance cognition and regulate blood sugar levels
  • Rurmeric contains a potent anti-oxidizing enzyme
  • Cumin contains phosphatidylethanolamine. Although impossible to pronounce, this lipid facilitates brain cell regeneration
