Aromatherapy for Alzheimer’s patients

Essential oils from plants have been used therapeutically for centuries to improve physical and mental health. Ancient Egyptians used them as perfumes, and there are many references in the Bible to their use in mental and physical healing.

A limited number of clinical trials have concluded that aromatic oils provide a potentially effective and safe treatment for psychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The link between the sense of smell and memories is strong, and certain aromas can be used to spark different results. Often times it is the sense of smell that will bring the mind back into present day by allowing a patient the ability to recognize and associate quality care and friendship with a particular scent.

A popular oil for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia is lavender. One care giver reports that she uses it for comfort and sleep with her patients with good success. In a clinical trial in the U.K, lavender sachets under the pillows had beneficial effects on sleep of people with dementia. Lemon balm has also been reported to aid sleep, soothe emotions and manage aggressive behavior. Other helpful oils for sleep and relaxation include rose, neroli, geranium and jasmine.

Poor appetite can be a common problem for people with Alzheimer’s as well. Oils that may help stimulate appetites and help with memory include lemon, lime, nutmeg, clove, coriander, orange, grapefruit, ginger and cardamom.

While aromatherapy works by providing a pleasing smell, some people with advanced dementia have lost their sense of smell. But according to another U.K. study, while a purely olfactory form of lavender aromatherapy had no effect on agitation in people with dementia, some responded when a lavender skin lotion was applied.

As essential oils can benefit those suffering from Alzheimer’s, they can also be helpful to those caretaking, whether they are family, friends or health care professionals. Everyone dealing with this challenging disease needs some good comfort and sleep.
