The Power of Music
Music is a powerful reminiscence tool - especially for people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In fact, studies show music can spark compelling outcomes even in those in the very late stages of the disease.
Music has the power to shift moods, help manage stress-induced agitation, stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function, and coordinate motor movements. It can also reduce anxiety and pain for people with Parkinson’s and other diseases that damage brain chemistry, as well as reconnect them with the world and improve their quality of life.
Recognizing all of the positive effects music has on those with memory loss, Bridges® by EPOCH has implemented a music therapy program for residents. Melody Connections provides iPods®, headphones and personalized playlists to residents living with dementia.
Our team works with residents and their families in developing these personalized playlists that feature all the music they once loved. This music taps into deep memories not lost to dementia and can bring them back to life, enabling them to converse, engage and stay present.
